OUR PROGRAM
École Marie Gibeau follows the Quebec Education Plan designed by the Ministry of Education. While the program is dispensed in French, it is enriched with 50% more of English classes. All the activities and work are planned carefully to make learning an enjoyable experience for children. With help and encouragement from the teacher, your child will gradually acquire new experiences and master more complex abilities, consequently anchoring his/her confidence. We attach great importance to English as a second language as well as to arts and sports.
École Marie Gibeau strongly values sports and arts and uses both to consistently incite a thirst for learning. Five hours of physical education, including one hour of karate, are integrated into the curriculum starting in kindergarten until the end of the second cycle. Studies have established a link between physical activity and academic performance; enhanced concentration and attention impact learning in many positive ways.
Individual work and team work are ways of learning that allow for exploration, experimentation and discovery. Both approaches develop creativity and increase autonomy while still facilitating the art of exchanging and negotiating. Formal lectures, work and games are excellent methods to teach the child to gain further knowledge about himself/herself, to interact with his/her peers and to respect his/her environment.
No more tears at home over homework! Teachers complete homework with the children in class. The only part that remains is studying. This will help to further the child’s understanding and allow for continuity in his/her schoolwork while decreasing the workload at home.
Children learn best when they use their imagination. All throughout kindergarten and elementary school, the following performing and visual arts classes will be offered:
- music
- dance
- drama and arts & crafts
Programs involving music, dance, acrobatic dance and hip-hop give your children the opportunity to express themselves through rhythm and movement.
École Marie Gibeau attaches tremendous importance to English as a second language:
For Cycle 1: Children receive the equivalent of one hour of instruction in English per day, compared to public schools that only offer one hour per week.
For Cycle 2: Children receive the equivalent of 1h30 of instruction in English per day, compared to public schools that only offer two hours per week. For Cycle 3: For the children who have followed our English program since Cycle 1, the equivalent of 3 months of English instruction will be offered.
THE ORGANIZATION OF GROUPS
In order to better meet the needs of our students, our school is made up of small groups. A maximum of 20 children per class can be found in our Elementary school. In addition, because your child brings his/her own luggage of knowledge and mode of communication, it is essential for the teacher to discover each child’s learning type in order to present an environment that promotes observation, exploration and questioning in various ways.
A great emotional stability is supported by the fact that they are always the same children, with the same teacher, in the same classroom, at the same hours. This allows the child to feel safe, to adapt to the new surroundings and to feel quickly like he/she belongs in HIS/HER school.
TEACHING STAFF AND OTHER PROFESSIONALS
The role of the teacher is undoubtedly to provide a stimulating environment, but also to adapt the challenges to the capabilities and level of development of each student. At Marie Gibeau, three words describe our teaching staff: competence, stability and stimulation. All personnel involved in the development of your child graduated from university in the area in which they must intervene.
The staff that comes into contact with your child watches over him/her and helps him/her embrace increased accountability for one’s own physical and mental health, surrounding environment and quality of community life.
We are a multidisciplinary team with diverse and complementary experiences. Although each of the adults with whom the child comes into contact with has his/her own set of competencies (education, administration, etc.), there exists within the team great complicity that allows for harmony and continuity in the educational project.
COLLABORATION BETWEEN PARENTS, TEACHERS AND SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION
Communication between parents and teachers, as well as between parents and school administration, is well established here, because the team strongly believes in the value of dialogue in education. To this end, you will receive periodic assessments of changes in your child’s learning. École Marie Gibeau also uses the Portal as a communication tool. You can check grades, read about upcoming events and get the school’s newsletter easily on the Portal. Furthermore, through this tool, you will receive an invitation to meet with your child’s teacher and discuss the successes and challenges that lay ahead. An appointment can then be made within seconds. École Marie Gibeau can proudly say that with the help of this communication tool, it has made the green shift. At any time, you can contact the administration to arrange a meeting with the teacher or mention a change in the life of your child.
A parents’ committee has also been set up for your convenience. However, parents are always welcomed in our offices so that we can continue to preserve our precious human relationships.
One day, your child will thank you for giving him/her the opportunity to study at Marie Gibeau.
